COMING UP ON 8:05, FILING YOUR EARNINGS COULD BE EASIER AND FREE IF YOU QUALIFY. CREIGHTON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ARE TAKING PART IN TAX SEASON. WAVERLE: THEY WILL HELP OTHERS FILE THEIR TAXES FOR NO CHARGE. QUANECIA FRASER IS LIVE WITH DETAILS. QUANECIA: THIS ROOM IS QUIET NOW, BUT THEY GOT REALLY QUIET. IT WAS JUST BUSY A MINUTE AGO. THEY WERE CHATTING AND PREPARING TO HELP OTHERS IN THE METRO FILE THEIR TAXES FOR FREE. THIS IS PROFESSOR THOMAS PARCELL, AN ACCOUNTING PROFESSOR. HOW DO YOU QUALIFY TO GET YOUR TAXES FILED FOR FREE? >> THE VITA PROGRAM TARGETS PEOPLE THAT ARE UNDER $55,000 IN ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME. WE HELP MARRIED PEOPLE AND SINGLE PEOPLE, SEPARATED PEOPLE, PRIMARILY WITH THE EARNED INCOME CREDIT, CHILD TAX CREDIT AND CHILD DEPENDENT CARE CREDITS, BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE MAJOR DRIVERS FOR LOWER INCOME PEOPLE. QUANECIA: YOU GUYS ARE HELPING PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY, BUT HOW DOES THIS HELP STUDENTS? >> THIS IS AN ACADEMIC LEARNING EXPERIENCE. AS PART OF THEIR COURSEWORK, THEY HAVE TO DO THIS. IT REINFORCES WHAT THEY ARE LEARNING. THEY GO THROUGH TRAINING FOR THE IRS BEFORE THEY ARE QUALIFIED TO DO THIS. THEY ARE ALSO IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEMESTER, AND I TEACH THAT CLASS AND I PUT THINGS THEY NEED TO KNOW TO DO THIS IN THE FRONT PART. IT REINFORCES WHAT THEY ARE LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM, AND GIVES THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO CLIENT SERVICE. QUANECIA: THANK YOU SO MUCH. TO FIND OUT THE OTHER DAYS THEY WILL BE DOING THIS AS WELL AS WHETHER YOU QUALIFY, WE HAVE A LINK TO THE WEBSITE ON KETV.COM. REPORT
