India’s hiring activity tumbled 62% year-on-year in April as the Covid-19 lockdown tore through the economy, according to a survey by job portal Naukri.com.
The Naukri JobSpeak Index, a monthly gauge which records hiring based on the job listings on the employment website, fell to 951 last month, from 2,477 in the year-ago period.
The decline in recruitment was seen in industries like hotels, restaurants, travel, airlines, automobile, auto ancillary, retail, accounting and finance.
Job market across cities registered a double-digit dip in hiring, led by metros. Delhi posted a 70% dip followed by Chennai at 62%, Kolkata and Mumbai at 60% each.
There was an across-the-board slump in hiring at varied experience levels with the entry-level experience bands (0-3 years exp.) witnessing the sharpest drop at 67%. Hiring for senior-level executives (4-7 yrs. exp.) crashed 62%, middle management roles (8-12 yrs. exp.) clocked a 55% decline, senior management roles (13-16 yrs. exp.) fell 53% and leadership roles (16+ yrs. exp.) plummeted 50%.
