Amazon on Tuesday said its grocery delivery service Pantry has been expanded to cover 300 cities, at a time when India is seeing a spurt in the number of Covid-19 cases, keeping demand for home delivery of groceries and essential products high.
The company said customers across 10,000 pin codes will be able to choose from a selection of 3,000 products across 200 brands which will be delivered within 1-2 days.
However, unlike Amazon’s Pantry service in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune, customers in the newly added cities will not be able to choose slots for their pantry deliveries.
“Amazon Pantry has become popular with customers as it fulfils their grocery demands and gives them great savings. With this expansion, customers in more than 300 cities & towns can get access to safe doorstep delivery of grocery essentials,” said Saurabh Srivastava, Director – Category Management, Amazon India.
During the first month of India’s Covid-19-induced lockdown, Amazon had struggled to fulfil orders for groceries and other essentials it was receiving. Over time, the company recovered its supply chain and by May, it was operating Pantry in over 100 cities.
ET had reported that while e-commerce firms have recovered between 80-90% of their order volumes, the value of goods hasn’t recovered yet. However, online sales of groceries, which nearly doubled during the lockdown, have remained high, driving a bigger chunk of sales for players such as Amazon.
