Sales of food delivery platforms recovered by an additional 10% over last month to touch 85% of the pre-Covid-19 levels, food ordering firm Zomato said in a report on Wednesday.
While Delhi and Mumbai are nearing full recovery, with 95% of pre-Covid-19 sales, other metros such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai are still behind the curve with 80% recovery, the company said, adding that sales in cities such as Kolkata, Patna, Jamshedpur, Ranchi, and Siliguri have even exceeded the pre-pandemic levels.
“With the ongoing IPL season and the subsequent festival season, we expect food delivery in both metros and smaller cities to make a full recovery soon – and resume growing over pre-Covid levels,” Deepinder Goyal, CEO of Zomato, said in a blog post.
Overall spends on premium restaurants have jumped 25% over pre-pandemic levels as customers stay indoors with their families to avoid contracting the coronavirus, the company said. Group ordering or items per order rose 20% over pre-Covid-19 levels, it said.
Some of India’s largest restaurant chains including Impresario Handmade, Olive Group, Pizza Hut, and KA Hospitality which runs Hakkasan and Yauatcha expect the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season to boost their home delivery order numbers by as much as 30%, even as dine-in footfalls remain tepid, ET reported earlier this month.
