Have you heard the IRS’s latest announcement regarding the tax filing extension? Like last year, the IRS has extended the federal tax deadline to give taxpayers additional time to file and pay income taxes. But that’s not all—many states and localities are also updating their state and local income tax deadlines to match the IRS tax deadline.
So, what’s the new deadline with the IRS tax payment extension? Is your state’s tax filing deadline extended? Keep reading to get all of the must-have details on the tax day extension.
Federal tax filing extension for 2020 returns
Normally, you must file your tax return by April 15 (aka “Tax Day”). But in 2020, the IRS pushed back the federal tax deadline to July 15 due to the coronavirus. And in 2021, the IRS is once again pushing back the federal tax return deadline.
The new federal tax filing deadline with extension is now May 17, 2021.
Thanks to the IRS extension, you have until May 17 to file your 2020 tax return—without incurring penalties and interest. The IRS payment extension applies to individual taxpayers and those who pay self-employment taxes. However, this extension does not apply to quarterly estimated tax payments due on April 15, 2021.
Due to severe winter storms, the IRS has extended the federal tax deadline to June 15, 2021 for individual and business tax payments in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.
You might be wondering, Why is the tax filing deadline extended? This extension aims to give taxpayers more time to file their tax returns, particularly if they owe money to the government.
If you will be receiving a refund, the IRS encourages you to file as soon as possible.
State tax extensions for 2020 returns
Generally, the state tax return deadline is April 15 each year. But with the coronavirus still impacting many individuals, states are beginning to push back state tax return deadlines.
Some states, like Illinois, Louisiana, and Maryland, have extended their deadlines into the summer (e.g., May, June, July), giving taxpayers additional time to file and pay state taxes.
Keep in mind that for many states, the state will automatically waive late-payment penalties for payments remitted by the new tax return due date. However, some states will not waive accrued interest. Consult your state about what penalties and/or interest they automatically waive.
