The government will make it mandatory for every e-commerce company to acknowledge consumer complaints in 48 hours and redress them in a month, food, public distribution and consumer affairs minister Ram Vilas Paswan said on Monday.
The new rules, finalised in consultation with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, will be notified in three-four days, said Paswan. He said the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), which will be empowered to conduct investigations into violations of consumer rights and institute complaints and prosecution, will also be set up.
The new Consumer Protection Act, which has tougher provisions, comes into effect from July 20. It introduces the concept of product liability and brings within its scope the product manufacturer, product service provider and product seller, for any claim for compensation.
“The regulations for direct marketing will be notified in two weeks as consultations are on with stakeholders,” said Paswan.
